The EVOLVE project will demonstrate the important role that ocean energy can play in Europe’s future low carbon energy system
Although implementation of renewable energy technologies is accelerating across Europe, providing a consistent and stable supply of power from variable energy sources like wind is a key challenge. By modelling future power system scenarios across Europe, the EVOLVE project will quantify how ocean energy can not only supply power to our electricity grids, but also enable a more diverse energy mix and cost-effective matching of energy supply and demand. In turn, the project will deliver a business case for future ocean energy developments as an integral part of Europe’s future energy system.
Project summary
- EVOLVE is a transnational partnership between research institutions, technology developers and industry organisations dedicated to building an evidence base for marine renewable energy as part of a diverse energy system.
- The EVOLVE project will build an evidence case for market support for marine energy projects in Europe.
- EVOLVE will demonstrate the benefits of marine renewable energy as part of a diverse energy system, including increased energy security and cost-effective matching of electricity supply and demand.
- The project will quantify the benefits associated with integrating ocean energy in low carbon energy systems across North West Europe. Quantifiable benefits can be measured using indicators such as the reduction in cost to the consumer through improved grid balancing, and changes in capacity credit and loss of load expectation.
